What makes it so special
Why visit Makatea?
History and phosphate mining
Makatea’s most striking feature is its unique geological structure. Millions of years ago, a shift in the Earth’s crust elevated the atoll about a hundred metres above sea level, forming majestic limestone cliffs. The island’s subsoil contained phosphate deposits.
From 1917 to 1962, the island’s economy relied on phosphate mining, with the local population working alongside foreign labourers. The first and only railroad in French Polynesia was constructed to transport the mined phosphate to the island’s port. Remnants of this industrial past can still be seen today, including abandoned mines, tunnels, the old port, and the remains of the railroad.
Climbing and discovering
Recently, Makatea has embraced eco-tourism to revitalise its economy and has become a popular destination for climbing enthusiasts. The limestone cliffs feature well-marked trails suitable for both beginners and experienced climbers. Local guides are trained to accompany climbers and ensure their safety.
Makatea is an authentic Polynesian island with no large hotels, but you can enjoy a comfortable stay in one of the island’s welcoming Tahitian guesthouses.
