Nuku Hiva, the capital of the Marquesas Islands and the second largest island in French Polynesia after Tahiti, offers an authentic blend of culture and nature. The island’s rugged scenery is breathtaking, with deep valleys, majestic waterfalls, and lush green mountains plunging directly into the ocean. The soft black sand beaches add a touch of austerity, softened by the friendliness of the local population. Taiohae, the main village, is the ideal starting point for exploring this mystical and magical island. Nuku Hiva is not only a stunningly beautiful island but also a vibrant cultural hub where ancient traditions and ceremonies are still proudly celebrated. Visitors are welcome to attend these festivities to enjoy traditional music and dancing, and admire the magnificent local craftsmanship.

Between culture and hiking

Nuku Hiva offers a wide array of land-based activities. It is an exceptional destination for hiking, with trails that wind through luxuriant valleys, along steep cliffs, and up to scenic viewpoints high in the mountains. You can trek to the spectacular Hakaui and Vaipo waterfalls, the highest in French Polynesia, or visit various archaeological sites such as Upeke, Taaoa, and the paepae at Hatiheu.

The island is also home to several marae and remnants of ancient villages, which serve as the backdrop for traditional ceremonies and festivities still celebrated by the local community.

A domestic flight with Air Tahiti takes 3 hours and 15 minutes from Tahiti-Faa’a to Nuku Hiva. The airport is located in the north of the island, quite a distance from the main village of Taiohae in the south. The journey to Taiohae takes about 1.5 hours, offering magnificent scenery and encounters with freely roaming cows and horses along the way. Alternatively, you can rent a car or scooter to explore the island at your own pace. Another option is to visit all six inhabited Marquesas Islands on a cruise, with most cruise itineraries including the Marquesas Islands after visiting the Tuamotu Islands.
