The Museum of The Islands of Tahiti, Te Fare Mahana, is an ethnographic museum situated in the district of Punaauia, about 15 km from Papeete on the west coast of Tahiti. Built in 1974 by the Territorial Assembly as a public establishment belonging to the territory, the aim of the museum is to conserve and restore Polynesian artefacts and cultural practices. Various exhibitions and cultural events are staged regularly and are open to the general public. The building is in a large garden by the sea and there is an ethnobotanical trail in the gardens.
