A valley of historical interest.
The Fataua valley lies between Pirae and Papeete. The valley begins at the gate of Polynésienne des Eaux, Papeete's drinking water concessionaire. A 3-kilometer path leads to the Fachoda bridge. It's an easy, shady route, ideal for outings with family or friends. There's also an easily accessible "marae" along the way. After the Fachoda bridge, the hike becomes more difficult. Hikers can choose between two routes: the first follows the river to reach the foot of the waterfall, and the second crosses the river via a bridge to reach the waterfall from above. The route takes you to a series of basalt boulders and natural waterfalls. From here, it's possible to reach the ruins of the Fachoda fort and the governor's gardens. After this, the trail continues to the Col du Toevere, at around 600 m altitude, which leads to the Punaruu valley in Punaauia via the Col du Diadème.
A valley access permit is required. The fee is 600 francs per adult and 150 francs per child aged 12 and over. The offices, located on the first floor of the administration building, are open from 7.30 a.m. to 2.30 p.m. Monday to Thursday, and until 1.30 p.m. on Fridays.
